The Lonely Together are an alternative dream rock band from Scotland, carving a mysterious path through love and sadness, hope and anger, beauty and pain.
Founded on the emotive songwriting of Edinburgh’s Mike Baillie, The Lonely Together have set a high standard for an independent outfit, beginning life in some of Scotland and America’s best studios and touring with the likes of Snow Patrol, Augustana, Idlewild, Frightened Rabbit, Stars, Delays, The Twilight Sad, The Besnard Lakes, Thom Artway, Lake Komo and George Cosbyamongst many more.
Having earned his stripes under the wing of Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody in the indie bustle of early-noughties Glasgow and through his involvement in bands such as Our Lunar Activities, Make Model and Terra Diablo, Baillie would eventually turn his passion and drive to his own material.
Mapping out early sketches of songs and ideas during recording sessions at Ardent Studios, Memphis in 2009, where he was undertaking guitar and backing vocal duties for power pop notables, The Scruffs, Baillie would return home with a plan to begin building a band in his own image - The Lonely Together.
After taking time to get things right, working out of the aptly-named CaVa Sound Workshop studios in Glasgow with Geoff Allan (Arab Strap/Belle & Sebastian) and fully realising his ideas in material and line-up, Baillie and his new outfit would go on to test the water with first singles, Be Strong Frances, A Million Summers and Congregation and LP title-track, Everything Viewed Backwards Through The Rearviewmirror.
Starting life strong, The Lonely Together would debut to a sold-out Edinburgh Liquid Room and continue to attract a loyal fanbase thereafter, through their passionate, drum-tight live shows all over Scotland - several of which would be hometown sell-outs.
The next few years would also see Baillie spending more time in the USA, working on a new project with Bobby MacIntyre (The Twilight Singers/Mark Lanegan/Lucinda Williams) and touring in a solo capacity with the likes of Augustana, Don DiLego, Jesse Malin and Rhodes. He would also find time to earn co-write credits and appear on the latest album from David Paton, of 70s smash hit group, Pilot. These extra-curricular opportunities would subsequently delay the release of The Lonely Together’s debut LP and see the Covid-19 virus creep into our lives during Jesse Malin’s 2020 UK tour. During the coronavirus pandemic that would follow - finally afforded the time - Baillie would throw himself into work.
Drawing from his rich palette of songs, awash with breathtaking imagery and sentiment - from lovelorn tales of winter forests to soul-enriching sunsets and summertime love - The Lonely Together released their long-awaited debut, Everything Viewed Backwards Through TheRearviewmirror on July 9th, 2021 to great acclaim in the UK, enjoying heavy rotation on Amazing Radio and being championed on BBC 6Music by legendary music broadcaster, Steve Lamacq.
Wasting no time or momentum, Baillie began recording the output he had yielded through a deeply emotional lockdown, with long-time friend and colleague, Rod Jones (Idlewild). Across just four weeks, in and out of a continued UK lockdown, the second The Lonely Together LP, Endless Sunset Oblivion would be brought to life, featuring another old friend, Johnny Scott (Chvrches/The Kills) on drumming duties and Scotland’s premier string section, The Cairn String Quartet.
Endless Sunset Oblivion is set for a 2023 release and could see Baillie returning to the USA to re-launch the full The Lonely Together live experience ahead of it.
